Applying for a FFL
Applying for a FFL is really not that complicated… once you decide to request one. The number one question that people often as is “How long does it take to get one?” Sad to admit, the answer to that QUESTION is on the official ATF website, but they answer the question in a way that satisfies the request, but does not really tell the entire story.
Before I get started and just for the record…I want to proclaim to the entire world that what I am about to write is 100% my opinion. So, anyone reading this needs to understand that I offer NO statistics or special circumstances….just what I believe in the deepest trenches of my heart from the information I have gathered over the years.
If you are after “factual” information, or statistics, I wish you luck in being able to locate the statistics I imply out here on the Internet. Maybe you will be able to find it on some official website of some agency….maybe.
I simply would like to write about my feelings about applying for a FFL.
The following is a screenshot, from the ATF website, which exists in the public domain;
It seems like a very straight forward answer, to a very straight forward question, but the truth is much less obvious. What you asked is how long does it take to get a FFL and the response simply states that the ATF will approve or disapprove an application within 60 days. That sounds so septic and so simple, but the truth is much deeper. In reality they are obliged to process the application in that time frame, and the application process in itself is what has a good chance of causing you to be denied. What that means is that everything in your application has to be perfect, and if it is not perfect…your application for the FFL will be disapproved.
I have written many articles on this subject and hope you realize that you will have one chance to get your application approved in a timely manner. If you forget, or omit pretty much anything that is required, your application will be denied and the letter of the law has been satisfied. Once your application has been denied is when the fun, and the wait begins. If your application is denied for any reason you will no longer have your application processed in a timely manner. Once you have been denied, your application for a FFL is based on an appeal and that appeal can drag on for a very long time.
The government has no desire to allow the citizens to buy firearms, in bulk, and by making it difficult applying for a FFL slows down the process of getting a FFL. The hope is that you will screw something up, get frustrated and go away without the FFL. This should have been easily noticed by the absence of specific information that pertains to the FFL application process. If you want FREE food, money or child support you can simply log onto some website and you get FREE stuff from Uncle Sam. Why can’t it be that simple when applying for a FFL? Why is it so easy to sign up for government dependence but so difficult to get a FFL application filled out correctly?
If you are thinking of applying for your FFL I hope you have the brains to not think it is as simple as just signing some forms and mailing them in to the ATF. If you hope to get your FFL I hope you understand that if you make an administrative mistake of any kind, your application will take a death spiral and you will have to start all over again. Of course there is no time limit on how long it will take to get your appeal through and how much more money it will cost you, so if you are going to apply for a FFL you really better get some professional assistance. You would never go into court without a lawyer and to approach getting a FFL without some sort of representation could prove to be not only foolish, but also expensive.
