FFL Top 10 Questions

It is really a sad state of affairs when the Federal Government requires so much of the citizens to be able to buy and sell guns and creates a legal process that is difficult to navigate.  There is so much that is required to successfully complete the FFL application process that we have decided to create this small section to answer some of the many questions that we receive on a daily basis.  We have decided to create a sort of question and answer database for those that are seeking a FFL.  Please scroll down and search what we have complied as the top 10 questions for the FFL application process, with the best answers we could come up with for you.  Please check with your local ATF office or refer to a FFLkit for information to confirm the answers before you make any decisions based on the answers provided.  We try our best to be accurate but laws change and even we have a hard time keeping up with all the laws our government spews out.

Before we list and answer the questions we want you to understand that if you are planning on applying for a FFL, you really better understand that you need to get the application right the very first time!  We could go into this a great deal, but instead of wandering off the topic of questions and answers, we will refer you to another article on this site.  Let’s just say quickly that if you screw up the application, you will be in ATF limbo for a time period that might upset you, so here is the link to the article you should read.     :>Article Link<:ATF-LOGO

Here is a list of random questions in no specific order.

Can I conduct a FFL business from my home?
Yes, but you need to ensure that local zoning requirements allow it to happen.  It will depend on whether your local laws allow you to run a business from your home.

Is record keeping important when you have a FFL?
Any transactions associated with your FFL need to be recorded and documented with the best possible care.  The ATF requires all of the information be saved and provided to them on request.  This may include, but is not limited to who, what when, where and how.

Can I buy and sell guns for myself with a FFL?
Yes, you can buy firearms for yourself and your own personal collection.  There are rules that need to be adhered to such as maintaining ownership of said firearm for at least one full year.

Do I need to show a profit to maintain a FFL?
Everything we have read is that you need to desire to make a profit when you apply and you will need to show a profit when operating.  This does not mean you need to make a ton of money, you just need to make a profit and the word profit just needs to be a…profit.

How much does it cost to get a FFL?
At the time of this writing the cost to obtain a FFL is $200.00 for the first 3 years and then $90.00 every 3 years thereafter.

Are FFL’s soon going to be impossible to get?
Now that is a tough one, because we have no crystal ball.  The ruling over who can get a FFL, or what is required to get a FFL is 100% controlled by the government, our government.  As time goes on there seems to be a subtle movement towards intolerance of personal gun ownership.  There are so many restrictions that are now in place that were not there 10, 20 or 100 years ago.  We could chalk it up to anything you want, but the end result is that it is now more difficult to obtain a gun today then it was years ago.  Is this an infringement of gun ownership rights?  Is this an example of gun rights being whittled away?  As of the writing of this short essay, we only can look at the past to guess what the future will bring, but we know of no single law or legislation on the docket that will push obtaining a FFL into the realm of impossible.  Although they are difficult to get today, they are not yet impossible.  There is currently no rush to getting or applying for a FFL, so take your time and do it correctly the first time to avoid the appeals process.

Do I pay less money buying firearms with a FFL?
Yes, you will then be eligible to order guns from the manufacturer, at wholesale prices.

Can I make money with a FFL?
Yes.  It is possible to earn money and show a profit with a FFL.  There are a few ways to show a profit.

  • Buy guns at wholesale prices and sell at or near retail prices
  • Take delivery of guns for others ordering online, accept deliver from vendor (wholesaler) and then provide transfer, at a small cost

Are FFL kits worth the money?
This also is a tricky question and one that only you can answer.  The problem with applying for a FFL is the appeals process as explained in the link above.  If you are serious of getting a FFL then you really should be as educated as much as possible in the area of the application.  Applying for a FFL can be equated to going into a court for a trial.  If you choose to have an attorney represent you chances are that you will fair better in the legal proceedings.  If you enter a trial without an attorney your chances of getting what you want are whittled down in a very big way.  Using a FFL Kit to help you apply for your FFL just helps decrease your chances of being denied and having to enter the dreaded appeals process.  The one thing you want to do is stay out of the appeals process and the use of a FFL Kit can only help your chances of success.

What is the best FFL Kit available?
We feel as if there are two leaders in the FFL Kit market.  The first one is FFLKit.com and FFL123.com.  They are both good and they will both guide you through the FFL application process.  Which one is better?  That really is up to personal taste because they both will assist.  If we had to make a choice we would go with FFLKit.com

We just like the way they support you and we feel as if they have more experience.  Do not take our word for it though, as it will all come down to personal experience.
